BOCC Proposed Trash Tax Increase Becomes Reality

As predicted, the County Commissioners passed the full 20% increase for the Waste Management non ad valorem tax for residential solid waste collection, distribution and recycling rate for the fiscal year 2024-2025. During the May BOCC meeting, County staff proposed a 10% increase per household as they felt it was the appropriate amount for increase in costs. Then BOCC members, at my opponent, Commissioner Jim Scholl’s suggestion, approved a possible increase of 20%, or DOUBLE what staff recommended. While this COULD have been negotiated lower, it was not and now residents in unincorporated areas of Monroe County must pay this increase.

THIS is why I’m running for County Commissioner. It is too easy for the BOCC to spend resident’s hard earned money without a thought as to how this will affect those barely able to make ends meet. Commissioners shouldn’t work for Waste Management, who made $2.7 BILLION in profit last year, they should work for YOU. If I was on the Commission, I would not have let them do this without a fight! Your support can help me become the next County Commissioner, so that locals’ needs come first. Can you help us with a contribution of $50, or $100? Any amount will make a difference in our people powered campaign.
