Can We Do More with Our TDC Funds?
At the April BOCC meeting the topic came up regarding creative ways to use TDC funds going forward. 40% of all TDC funds collected must go towards promoting tourism in the Florida Keys, and the 3rd and 4th pennies are reserved for DAC projects, and brick & mortar spaces, such as parks, museums and public facilities.
A very interesting discussion took place where the commissioners deliberated whether or not the last 2 pennies could be used towards repairing roads, structures or flooding damage that tourists use or that affects tourism itself. I think this is a great direction for the BOCC to go. Thinking outside of the box for millions of dollars that could help improve the necessities of our infrastructure and still be considered a District Expenditure is the best plan possible to maximize the 4% tourist tax to keep our islands a destination people want to come to, as well as prevent future property tax hikes. These are the kind of ideas I would be in favor of when commissioner and to initiate ideas on how to stretch our assets so they make sense and still fit in the rules and regulations of what their purpose is for.
The TDC and the BOCC have a long way to go in restoring our trust in the TDC. It was disturbing to learn that the tens of millions of dollars that flow through the TDC had not been audited in TWENTY years I can promise that as a former auditor and with a degree in accounting, I will be sure that not only the TDC continues to get regularly audited, but to look at any other areas that may not have its checks and balances set, and to advocate proper protocols to make certain this type of disaster doesn’t happen again. I am not afraid to ask the tough questions, get answers and hold people accountable for your tax dollars.
